Sunglasses. Make sure to use sun protection when boating.

Basking in the sun can feel great at the moment but wreak havoc on your system.

Sunshine contains two subsets of harmful rays that are present, even when it’s overcast and cloudy. Ultraviolet A (UVA) can damage the skin, while Ultraviolet B (UVB) can lead to painful sunburns.

Not only is the sun beating down on you, but it’s reflecting off the water and your boat, intensifying its impact. That means you need to double up on your protective measures.

How to Protect Yourself Against the Sun

Feel good long after the sun has set on your adventurous day by following these recommendations.

Slather On Sunscreen

You probably already know how important sunscreen is, but here are a couple of key reminders:

  • You want to use sunscreen that is waterproof or water-resistant and at least SPF 30, although the higher the SPF, the better.
  • Apply 15-30 minutes before venturing into the sun.
  • Reapply every two hours throughout the day.
  • If you go for a dip, reapply as soon as you’re dry.

The drawback of sunscreen is its greasiness and penchant for staining surfaces. Look for a sunscreen that won’t stain your boat

Don Sun Protection Shirts and Hats

Sunscreen is great, but you can go the extra mile by tossing on your favorite sun protection shirt. Because it can be hard to apply sunscreen to a full head of hair, hats keep your sensitive scalp from burning. A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap also helps shield your eyes.

If you’re looking for a comfortable addition to your shirt collection, shop our Smooth Moves Sun Protection Shirts.

Flash Your Sunglasses

UV rays from the sun affect and potentially harm your eyes, so make sure you have 100% UV protective sunglasses on hand. We recommend keeping a backup pair or two in case one goes overboard or gets lost.

Take a Break

As much as you might want to soak up the rays, treat yourself to a break once in a while. Grab some shade and cool down. Your whole system will appreciate the respite.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

One of the best things you can do while boating is drink plenty of water. We recommend bringing along a reusable water bottle or two. When you dock, remember to fill your bottles back up before heading out again.

Don’t Forget About Your Boat

Sunshine doesn’t just affect us; it affects your boat, too. Lengthen your boat’s lifespan by following maintenance procedures:

  • Before a long day on the water, apply boat wax to your clean hull.
  • As you’re putting your boat away, wipe down the surfaces.
  • Above all: Keep your boat covered (or at the very least stored in the shade) when not in use.
